Dear GHC families,

As the new President of the Girls Hockey Calgary Association (GHC) I would be neglectful if I did not start my tenure by acknowledging the tireless efforts of four individuals who have, over the past five years, built this Association into one of the premier hockey associations in Western Canada — Jody Forbes, Past President; Jamie Martin, Past VP Elite; Kyle Severson, Past VP Operations and Craig Perrett, Past VP Community. Their tireless efforts in the top to bottom overhaul of this great hockey association will be felt for years by our athletes and parents.

Our family has been a part of the GHC hockey community since our daughters began in Novice and Atom eight years ago. Like all our wonderful and supportive parents, we tied skates and taped sticks, helped them struggle into their equipment, cheered them on in the stands, drank bad rink coffee, wiped tears, and sang songs to and from the arenas north and south of, and around, Calgary. Not only have our daughters made lifelong friends along the way, so have we — and that is the magical effect that this great association has on all of us.

GHC has built an Elite powerhouse with teams made up of great female athletes, many of whom began their hockey development with GHC. This is a program that GHC wants to continue to build upon and show our younger players that if they work hard on and off the ice, this is a level of excellence that they too can achieve.

Our Community teams have undergone a year of change as GHC brought all 43 teams under the Hockey Calgary banner. This now allows the Community teams to play all league games within the City of Calgary boundaries. It is the direction of this new Board of Directors to consolidate our gains and provide incremental improvements as we move into the 2019-2020 hockey season.

GHC has grown to 803 athletes in 2019 from 501 in 2014, a sixty percent increase! That growth does not happen by magic. It happens because of parents like you who coach, manage, evaluate, time keep, carry jerseys and perform the myriad of tasks required by an association of this size. The GHC volunteer community is, unlike other Calgary associations, city-wide. It is this unselfish donation of your time that has built this great hockey association. Thank you!

Yours truly,

John MacDonald
